Congratulations to Quinn, Trenton, Rylan, Addie and Jalen for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the Rooks County Youth Entrepreneur Challenge. Quinn and Trenton also won the Technology Award. In all these SHS students are bringing home $1,100 in prize money! Way to go!

Redesign Spotlight:
8-12 grade communities
Relationships are key at USD #271 Stockton, and we are starting and ending each day with this in mind. Research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation and Stanford Research Center has all concluded that 85% of job success comes from having well-developed soft skills and people skills and only 15% of job success comes from technical and knowledge (hard skills).
At SHS students in grades 8-12 meet for the first ten minutes of school and the final 20 minutes of the day with their teacher advisor. These students will continue with the same group throughout their high school years. There are 14 community groups, consisting of 8-10 students ranging from 8-12 grades. Students form long-lasting relationships that benefit from a consistent daily presence.
In the a.m. meeting, students begin their day by writing in their journals: reflecting on one thing they are thankful for, a goal for the day or week and identifying which Zone of Regulation they are in. This is an opportunity for students to begin on a positive note, set goals and be aware of their emotional state. Students can also take advantage of the grab and go breakfast offered in the hallway as they enter.
The p.m. meeting consists of students and advisors working together on character development through discussion and reflection on our Tiger Touchstones and developing habits for success with the 16 Habits of Mind. Students are also developing their Individual Plans of Study, which includes exploring career interests and skills through the Career Cruising program, developing their Vision Board and sharing with parents, and planning their future course of study for high school and beyond. Advisor teachers serve as mentors to guide their students through this process.
The National Honor Society is organizing this year's Collect for Cures Program at SHS. This is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's effort to help those affected by blood cancers. SHS's online giving webpage at https://events.lls.org/pages/mid/StocktonHighSchool-2019 Ends 3/18.
Due to the dangerous wind chill being forecast for the morning hours, there will be no school in Stockton tomorrow, 3.4.19. The JH Scholars Bowl has been cancelled and will not be made up.

6th-7th grade Mentoring
As students in middle school encounter and struggle with social and emotional changes that occur during this transitionary period to adulthood, many educators seek to help students develop skills and dispositions—such as resilience, perseverance, and determination—to ensure that they can problem-solve and work through challenges as well as take ownership of their learning and decisions (National Middle School Association [NMSA], 2010).
At USD 271 we spend mentor time meeting the needs of students. We have three groups with a mixture of 6th and 7th grade students that meet once a day for 20 minutes. During this time, we cover essential life skills (Organization, Time Management, Self-Control, etc.) as well as improving students’ understanding of techniques to build confidence, increase self-esteem, advocate for themselves, build character, and be respectful young adults.
During mentor sessions, we use a variety of resources: Choices magazine from Scholastic, Career Cruising program, and Responsive Advisory Meeting Book. Career Cruising allows the students to find out what interests them and it gives insight on the steps they will need to take to achieve careers in a particular field. All three mentor groups cover the same concepts but at different times. Mrs. Dunlap’s group is currently working on deeper understanding of career interests and researching careers in that area. Miss Kennedy’s group has had extensive conversations about stress, what causes stress, and how to effectively manage stress. Mrs. Moffet’s group has been working hard on character building.
