Important Message
On Monday, November 16th, Grades 6th and 7th will begin remote learning through Friday, November 20th. Information on technology pickup will be emailed to parents.
PreK-5 will return to in-person learning on Tuesday the 17th except for the classes and individuals that are still in quarantine.
There will be no Junior High Basketball until after Thanksgiving break.
There will be no school at USD 271 on Monday November 23rd and November 24th.
Please help us to reduce the spread of the Covid virus by wearing a mask when you interact with anyone outside your immediate household and avoid all gatherings, large and small, which have been the source of spread over the last several weeks. Rooks County has seen a significant increase in both the number of positive cases and the rate of positive tests. During the month of October, RCH tested an average of 50 people per week and had a positivity rate of 22%. The week of November 2-8, 2020, RCH tested 99 people and saw a positivity rate of 37%. Since November 9, 2020, RCH has tested 112 people and has a current positivity rate of 47%. These changes are similar to numbers across Kansas and the US, where the number of new cases per day have set records. Kansas had an average of 2430 new cases per day for the last week. The US had more than 163,000 new cases yesterday.
Hospitals in Kansas are feeling the effects of this increase in very serious ways. RCH does have bed space available today but is experiencing difficulty every day with finding a place for patients who need transfer to a higher level of care. HaysMed and Salina are at capacity and currently on diversion, so patients are being transferred to Wichita or Kansas City. These cities are also noting bed shortages, which is concerning. What we do locally impacts these numbers. Please wear a mask when you interact with anyone outside your immediate household and avoid all gatherings, large and small, which have been the source of spread over the last several weeks.
USD 271 has experienced several COVID-19 cases over this week. We are scheduled to return our PreK-5th grade from remote learning to in-person learning with many staff returning at that time. At this time we will plan to return to in-person instruction on Tuesday for PreK-5 except for classes and persons who are still quarantined. All 6-12 grade classes will continue in-person learning for the week of November 16-20, 2020. If there is any adjustment required to the learning setting due to concerns in the schools, we will update your family quickly following a decision.

SJHS Basketball on Thursday, 11/19/20 at Plainville. Start Time is 4:00 pm - Boys games will be in the Cardinal Gym - 2 quarters of B Team and full A Team Game. They will not be requiring tickets due to the fact we only have 1.5 games. There will be NO Girls Games.

USD 271 - Stockton Schools
Positive cases of COVID-19 in a student or staff member:
The Rooks County Health Department is notified of all positive cases of COVID-19 in the county. Once the Health Department is notified of a positive case, they are required to call all of the close contacts to the positive case.
A close contact is someone who has been within 6 feet of a case for 10 minutes or more or had direct contact with bodily secretions (for example, being coughed or sneezed on). Any students or staff that maintained a 6-foot distance from the positive case would not be considered close contacts and would therefore not be subject to the 14-day quarantine period.
The time period for close contact tracing includes any day(s) the positive student or staff attended school and the preceding 48 hours prior to symptom onset (symptomatic cases) or the preceding 48 hours prior to sample collection (asymptomatic cases).
The Rooks County Health Department has contacted all of the direct contacts to the positive case, all staff, and parents of the students in the specific classrooms.

TO CAREGIVERS and COMMUNITY - November 8, 2020 Update
USD 271 Schools COVID-19 School Update: There will be no school on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Tuesday will be a Professional Development Day for staff to launch remote plans for grades PK-5 and deploy technology devices and packets for grades PK-5. We will deploy technology devices and packets on Tuesday from 3:30-5:00 PM. There will be more directions communicated on Tuesday. Grades PK-5 will be in REMOTE learning from Wednesday, November 11th through Monday, November 16th. Lunches will be available at the school. The pickup will be in Tiger Alley from 11:00-11:30.
Grades 6-12 will continue in-person learning starting Wednesday, November 11th. Their day will be a regular in-person day.
We will continue to monitor our positive cases and ongoing data to determine if other changes need to be made. We thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
School Closure on Monday, November 9th
USD 271 Schools will not be in session on Monday, November 9, 2020. As was stated in our update on Friday, we have an increase in the number of active cases, as well as we are waiting for test results for some students and staff. We also have students and staff in quarantine. We will use Monday to disinfect and provide teachers time to prepare for instruction with limited staff. Our ultimate goal is to continue in person instruction and this day will allow for staff self-care and a thorough cleaning of the building while staff and students are not present.
We would like to ask our parents/caregivers to help us keep our schools open by helping reduce the spread in our school and community. This can be accomplished by face coverings, social distancing, good hand hygiene and to limit social gatherings. Please keep all students home if they are feeling ill.

We continue to see an increase of positive cases within our county. The absenteeism rate is increasing (3.1% above baseline from 2019-2020). The positive testing rate has increased over the last week. There is an increase in the incidence rate in the county, so we are monitoring numbers closely.
We plan to continue in-person learning for the week of November 9-13, 2020. If there is any adjustment required to the learning setting due to concerns in the schools, we will update your family quickly following a decision.
